The sea water cooling system is one of the most critical and most frequently overlooked aspects of marine engine maintenance. At the heart of that system, in the vast majority of commercial and leisure marine applications, is a flexible impeller pump. Who Are JMP?

Why Flexible Impeller Pumps Matter
The flexible impeller pump is the primary method by which raw seawater is drawn through the engine’s heat exchanger to cool the closed freshwater circuit. It works by a simple but effective mechanism: a flexible rubber impeller rotates within an offset cam, creating a positive displacement action that moves water efficiently without relying on tight tolerances or complex sealing.
The advantages for marine use are considerable:
- Self-priming: the pump will draw water from a dry start without the need for a priming system
- Reversible: the impeller works in either direction, which can be useful in certain installation configurations
- Tolerant of debris: the flexible impeller can pass small particles that would damage a centrifugal pump
- Low maintenance: the main consumable is the impeller itself, which can be replaced in minutes with basic tools
The impeller is a service item, not a fit-and-forget component. In commercial operation we recommend annual replacement as standard, more frequently on high-hour engines or those running in particularly warm or debris-laden water.
A Note on Impeller Material
JMP impellers are available in a number of materials, the most common being nitrile (NBR) and neoprene. The right choice depends on the operating environment:
- Neoprene: suitable for most standard marine applications, better performance in higher temperatures and where the pump is exposed to ozone; a common choice for commercial engines.
- Nitrile: Good resistance to petroleum-based fluids and oily water. Commonly used in Bilge pumps
