The HD Hyundai electronic engine range continues to evolve, and with the 2027 ECA regulations now firmly on the horizon, we wanted to take the opportunity to bring our customers and dealers up to date on where the range stands today — and why we remain as confident as ever in it as the right solution for UK commercial operators.
HVO Readiness: A Significant Development
One of the most notable developments in the current range is HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) compatibility. HVO is an advanced renewable fuel that can be used as a direct drop-in replacement for diesel, without engine modification, and delivers a substantial reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared to fossil diesel.
HD Hyundai electronic engines are now HVO ready — meaning operators can switch to HVO immediately without any adjustment to the engine or its management systems. As HVO availability across UK marine fuelling infrastructure continues to grow, this gives Hyundai-powered vessels a genuine pathway to reduced carbon footprint today, not at some future point.
For operators facing increasing pressure around environmental performance — from port authorities, charterers, or their own sustainability commitments — HVO readiness is a practical and immediate advantage.
The SCR Package: What’s Included
We want to be clear about what is included when you order a Hyundai Tier III engine through Watermota, because it is a more complete package than many operators realise:
- The SCR muffler — the aftertreatment unit that reduces NOx emissions to IMO Tier III levels
- The DEF dosing tank — for the AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid) that feeds the SCR system
- The EIAPP certificate — the Engine International Air Pollution Prevention certificate, issued from the factory and observed by a marine classification society (RINA, KR, DNV)
- The full installation kit — documentation and hardware to support installation, with guidance available from our Hyundai-trained team
This is a complete, certified Tier III package — not an engine that requires a separately sourced and integrated aftertreatment system. That matters for installation planning, for certification, and for ongoing operational simplicity.
The Link ON Mobile App
The HD Hyundai Link ON app remains one of the most practically useful features of the electronic engine range for commercial operators. Via Bluetooth or cellular connection, the app provides:
- Real-time engine monitoring — RPM, coolant temperature, oil pressure, exhaust temperature
- Fault code reading and diagnosis — reducing the need for an engineer callout to identify common issues
- Operating hours and service interval tracking
- Remote diagnostics capability — useful for fleet managers and dealers supporting operators at a distance
For operators running tight schedules, the ability to diagnose a fault and speak knowledgeably to an engineer or dealer before they arrive on board has real commercial value.
Power Range: 130–908 kW
The Hyundai electronic range available through Watermota covers engine outputs from 130 kW to 908 kW — sufficient to meet the propulsion requirements of the vast majority of UK commercial vessels from workboats and fishing vessels through to larger passenger and offshore support craft.
