The clocks have gone forward, the days are getting longer, and for commercial operators and vessel owners across the UK, the busy season is just around the corner. Whether you run a fishing vessel out of Newlyn, a workboat on the Solent, or a passenger ferry along the south-west coast, spring is the single most important time of year to check your engine room is ready for what lies ahead.
At Watermota, we have been supplying the marine industry with engine room packages since 1911, and if there is one thing over a century of experience teaches you, it is this: the boats that stay in service are the ones whose owners maintain them properly in the off-season.
What Your Engine Has Been Through This Winter
Cold temperatures, reduced running hours, and the natural condensation that builds up inside cooling systems over the winter months all take their toll. Seawater pump impellers — one of the most commonly overlooked components — can set hard if a vessel has been laid up, losing flexibility and the ability to push coolant effectively. Run an engine with a deteriorated impeller and you risk overheating within minutes of leaving harbour.
Belts, hoses, and anodes also degrade seasonally. Zinc anodes in particular are working hard throughout the year whether you notice or not, and a sacrificial anode that is more than 50% consumed needs replacing before it fails to protect the hull and fittings it is designed for.
A good spring service is not just good practice — it is the difference between a productive season and an expensive breakdown at the worst possible time.
A Spring Service Checklist
We recommend working through the following before the season gets underway:
- Inspect and replace the seawater pump impeller — this should be done annually as standard
- Check all raw water hoses and clamps for cracking, swelling, or corrosion
- Service the sea water strainer and confirm it is clear of debris
- Inspect sacrificial anodes and replace if more than half consumed
- Check engine oil and coolant levels and condition — look for milky oil which can indicate a coolant leak
- Test the fuel system for water contamination, particularly in tanks that have sat over winter
- Inspect belts and tensioners for wear
- Run engine diagnostics where telematics are fitted — the HD Hyundai Link ON app makes this straightforward
