Watermota were contacted to re-power a commercial pilot vessel registered in the port of Falmouth. The brief from the customer was to increase engine power by 20% in order to achieve a maximum hull speed of 22 knots but reduce the fuel consumption of the vessel within its two main working duties.

Our engineers attended the vessel for an initial survey and customer meeting, in order to establish the customers’ requirements. Using our diverse range of products and network of contacts throughout the UK, we were able to establish a solution that could deliver the customers’ requirements both within budget and required timescale. We were then able to prepare an official offer accompanied by detailed technical drawings and product specifications for the customer to review. Once the order had been placed Watermota set to work planning the work and timing the deliveries to coincide with the vessels availability for dry dock to ensure the minimum downtime for the customer.

After installation and extensive sea-trials the customer was very impressed with the engine performance but most notably with the fuel savings that had been achieved.

After the vessel had been back in service for a couple of months the operator reported a 15% fuel saving at a full vessel speed of 22 Knots and a 24% saving at 14 Knots!
